About Me
When I moved from Hoboken in 2004 to Goshen NY I was a hairdresser in Manhattan. I was satisfied using hair as my artistic outlet until I discovered my love of clay. I took one class at Bostree studios in Sugarloaf, NY and I was hooked. Ray Boswell taught me how to throw, hand build and a basic knowledge about chemicals, glazing and kilns, he continues to be a source of inspiration for me whenever I need it.
My appetite for learning grows every day and I have found a love for Alternate Firing techniques such as Raku, Saggar, and Pitt firing. I started with a Saggar Workshop in Duneden Art Center in Florida with Brenda McMahon. I found the thrill of the unexpected with letting organic materials determine the soft beauty of each unique piece. I fear this was only the beginning.
I found a workshop a little closer to home at Canton Clay works with Tim Scull called Fire and Smoke. In this workshop we learned about Raku, Saggar, Pit, Sawdust and Fuming. I again found such a thrill in getting results that were personal to each piece. I was so enchanted by the results that I am attending more workshops this summer to further my knowledge in these techniques.
As you can see, it was not long before one passion took over and I was making Potts full time.
I now have a full studio in the basement my home which looks over the beautiful black dirt region in the Hudson valley of New York state. I currently make functional pottery in an electric kiln with glazes I have mixed and tested here in the studio. We are in the process (as soon as the ground thaws) of adding a gas and Raku kiln to the mix. These will allow me to pursue the alternate fire techniques I have come to love.
Each piece I make is an extension of myself and I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them.
